Candice Bergen Lists Hamptons Home for $18 Million

If you can’t get your hands on a coveted BergenBag—a designer purse hand-painted by Candice Bergen—here’s the next best thing: The Murphy Brown star and her husband Marshall Rose’s luxury cottage in East Hampton is now on the market for $18 million, Variety reports. Bergen moved into the gambrel-roofed home sometime around her 2000 marriage to the real estate developer, who built the house for himself and his first wife in the mid-1980s.

The dwelling, which is situated on 1.8 acres, spans about 4,500 square feet. In addition to the main house’s five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms, a guesthouse on the property adds another bedroom and bathroom. The house was designed by the late Jaque T. Robertson, of Cooper Robertson, who Bergen and Rose tapped once again in 2004 to oversee substantial renovations. Detailed in a March 2007 spread for AD, those changes included turning the entire downstairs into one long loft, adding an enclosed porch for year-round enjoyment, and swapping in cozier, more whimsical touches than the original, more formal decor.

And though Robertson was at first reluctant to renovate his award-winning original design—”It’s as if you’re asking me to operate on one of my own children,” he told AD—he ultimately understood the couple’s desire to make the home their own. “It has kept its architectural integrity,” Robertson said at the time. “It’s a very different house, but it’s still the same.”

There is also a carriage house on the property.

As the star of the new film Let Them All Talk explained at the time, “We wanted the house to be our house.” She added, “It was a beautifully thought-out house, and it was a delicate challenge to respect its history but reinterpret it as ours.”
